Share of U.S. Adults in Medicaid Coverage Gap, by Race and Ethnicity

  1. Latino: 35% (vs 19% in U.S. as a whole)
  2. Black: 24% (vs 12% in U.S. as a whole)
  3. Asian: 2% (vs 6% in U.S. as a whole)
  4. Other/Multiracial: 4% (vs 5% in U.S. as a whole)
  5. White: 35% (vs 57% in U.S. as a whole)
Notes: Estimates are for people aged 19-64. Adults in the Medicaid coverage gap have incomes below the federal poverty level (too low to qualify for financial help in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces), yet don’t qualify for Medicaid because they live in one of the ten states that have not adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion.
